Deadlight: Promo 2005
01/05/06 || Lord K Philipson
“The music is a mixture of metal and groovy, clean parts. We are sometimes accused of being heavily influenced by bands such as Katatonia, Opeth and Anathema, but in a world where everything has already been done ad nauseam, we don’t see that as too big an insult”.
Those are a few sentences from the letter that came with this promo, sent all the fucken way from Finland to Sweden. We feel fucken special now.
What’s stated in that said letter is definitely not bullshit, Deadlight sure sounds like Opeth, Katatonia and probably (fuck if I knew) Anathema as well. If they say so, I believe them. I heard one song by Anathema once, and that one sucked so… The other 2 bands I do know so that’s enough for me. The music? It’s kind of depressive and moody and all that shit, with vocal-lines reminiscent of latter Katatonia. And that’s not a bad thing at all since I think The Kat’s do some good things every now and then. But what Deadlight is lacking is the heaviness that Opeth displays and masters. The meant-to-be agressive parts here are not exactly that agressive. Deadlight focus more on the softer kind of things it seems, and they do it all quite well. Obviously, these guys are a quite talented bunch of musicians, especially the guitar-leads are worth a second or two of your attention. They are not re-inventing the fucken wheel or anything when it comes to solos, but they pull off some neat shit.
The 3 songs on this promo shows off a band with a good amount of talent and no amount of originality, but in the end it doesn’t really matter. Deadlight are good at what they do and I guess they are satisfied with that.
Despite the lack of heaviness I kinda enjoy this crap. And I absolutely love the vocalist’s last name, only becoz it reminds me of Tretjak, one of the best goalies ever. By the way, this is what Wayne Gretzky (some b-league player from Canada) once said about the great Tretjak:
“He has caused borders to be forgotten, political beliefs to be withheld, and cultures to be exchanged – while always standing tall in his representation of his team and his country”.
And today I have a new rating-system:
Production: 8.
Wayne Gretzky: 7.
Bandphoto: 3.
Vladislav Tretjak: 10.
Bandname: 0.
Letter: 3.
Vocalist’s last name: 9.
Final score: 7 KatatOpeth’s out of 10.
